A Five Year Tradition: CDI and Pet-Friendly Fridays

Markham, Ontario (PRWEB) December 03, 2014

This November, CDI?s Bring Your Pet to Work policy, ?Pet-Friendly Fridays? hit a milestone of five years since implementation. Employee demand for workplace flexibility has been on the rise in recent years, as nearly 70% of U.S. workers report feeling a strain in their work-life balance. Many of these demands involve the desire for a more comfortable workplace, and CDI has responded by gladly allowing employees to bring their biggest comforts from home?their pets?to work every week.

Pet-Friendly Fridays became a CDI staple five years ago when its Vice President, Gal Pikar, brought his dog into the office, and soon, other dog owners were being encouraged to do the same. The company purchased food and water bowls for each pet to make them feel at home. When CDI regularly had a few dogs coming in every Friday, the tradition took flight. Over the years, in addition to dogs, CDI has welcomed the odd rabbit, lizard, and even a shark that makes its home in a small aquarium in the company?s accounting department.

?I thought Pet-Friendly Fridays would be a bonus for me, but after a year of bringing in my dog, I have realized that others benefit from it too. I see the joy in their eyes when they pat my dog, or when she goofily runs toward them in eager anticipation?, says one CDI employee.

Studies show that pets in the workplace can help manage stress levels, increase job satisfaction and productivity, and vastly improve office relationships. On Fridays at CDI, employees can be seen greeting the friendly canines around the office. In a way, these pets have given CDI countless ?water cooler? moments, as they provide employees with a chance to walk away from their desks and strike up a conversation with a coworker, while entertaining the newest furry, fluffy, or even scaly addition to the CDI family.

?Pets at work sounds right. There was no real thought involved in the process; we simply said yes.? states CEO Saar Pikar. He adds, ?When I finally retire, this is going to be one of the highlights of my career?it is that much fun.?

No pet-friendly environment would be complete if the pets weren’t having fun too. Dogs are encouraged to play with each other, and if a pet is brought into the office, their human companion will always be close by. ?When I bring my dog to CDI, she offers wonderful stress relief and good emotions throughout the day,? another employee says. ?During her exercise break, I enjoy watching her bounce with happiness outside the building. One can?t help smiling and being in better spirits when back in the office.?

Eco-Fashion Forever (+ Some Great Green Clean Gift Ideas)

Eco Fashion Forever

As many of you know, last month I closed the doors to my eco-fashion line, Mountains of the Moon, after 15 years. And while I made the decision to focus on other things career-wise, I still am, and will always be, a big advocate of sustainable practices when it comes to apparel. So I was pretty stoked to read a recent Yahoo! Style article titled ‘Eco Fashion Gets Greener,’ which focuses on Fashion Positive – the new initiative from Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. The initiative hopes to give new meaning to the term ‘sustainability,’ by applying five principles (clean water improvements, renewable energy, social practices, designing for upcycling, and material health and chemistry) to materials (fibers, dyes, yarns, fabrics, threads).

In my years working in the sustainable fashion industry, one of the biggest lessons I learned was that in order for a garment to be truly eco-friendly, more needs to be taken into account than just the type of fabric used in creating it. Lots of companies have been quick to jump on the eco-fashion bandwagon over the years, and it always bummed me out to see a piece of clothing labeled as ‘green’ when it was made with organic cotton but produced in a sweatshop, or an ‘earth-friendly’ garment made with a recycled fiber that used massive amounts of energy to produce and harsh chemicals to dye, or a piece of ‘recycled’ jewelry made with reworked metals but packaged in excessive plastic. It was really refreshing to read about Fashion Positive’s mission to apply so many important aspects of sustainable fashion production as part of their initiative.

I also loved reading about how Lewis Perkins (Fashion Positive’s Senior VP) has not only teamed up with established eco-conscious brands who are already using sustainable models, but is also in talks with larger, more well-known design houses (like Gucci, Calvin Klein, and Seven for All Mankind). I met so many designers during my years working in fashion who wanted to make their lines more earth and social conscious, but had no idea how. The fashion industry as a whole tends to be incredibly wasteful, and in my option, by working with these larger brands to educate and brainstorm, a pretty substantial step is being taken toward making a profound difference when it comes to a more sustainable industry.

It’s easy to get caught up in the convenience and affordable price points of fast, disposable fashion. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m guilty of it myself. And I’ve also been disappointed at various times throughout the years when it’s felt like truly sustainable fashion might never become a real it for the masses. Reading this #YahooStyle article gave me a renewed enthusiasm and sense of hope that with some real work, education, and practice, eco-fashion can still eventually become the industry standard someday.

(Psssst… All the images you see above are from my former eco-fashion line. Each piece from every one of our collections was made locally with organic cotton, tencel, and hemp fabrics, dyed with nontoxic dyes using sustainable methods, crafted to last for decades, and packaged without plastic and with only 100% recycled tags designed to act as bookmarks after they were removed. Eco-fashion forever!)

While we’re discussing Yahoo! Style (and eco-conscious products), I also want to quickly share one other great piece I came across over there that’s a part of their gift guide series. Titled ‘Neat Freak: the Best Cleaning Items for Your OCD Friends‘ (best title for a gift guide ever), it features all sorts of creative ideas for those who like to keep things clean. The guide may not be specifically about eco-fashion, or even fashion, but there’s a lovely sense of style to each of these picks. There are also some really great eco-conscious items on it. The Murchison-Hume Everyday Furniture & Upholstery Cleaner ($ 9) is made from organic Australian white grapefruit and gets the job done without the use of chemicals. I’m also all about the Moso Line Bags – natural purifier-dehumidifiers that remove unwanted odors around the home without toxins. And how about The Laundress All-Purpose Cleaning Concentrate & All-Purpose Bleach Alternative Duo ($ 26)? Acclaimed New York cleaners The Laundress crafted these cleaning products to eliminate hazardous ingredients like bleach and other chemical surfactants, and they have a proven track record of keeping luxury fabrics looking brand new. Yes please. See the rest of the guide right here.

Do you consider sustainability when make clothing purchases? Have you purchased any eco-friendly holiday gifts this year?

Thank you Yahoo! for sponsoring this post. While this was a sponsored opportunity from Yahoo!, all content and opinions expressed here are my own.

THE ANIMAL FOUNDATION NOTICEABLE RESULTS DONATION REPORT

StoryThanks to you, check out the noticeable results from The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas, NV:

The Animal Foundation received a Halo Food donation in conjunction with the One Picture Saves A Life Photography Project held in June 2013. The donated food was used help individuals that were struggling to make ends meet at home and needed some assistance feeding their pets.

The food was distributed to rescue partners as well to help them keep their costs down so that they can devote their funds to helping more pets in need. The donation of cat and dog food from Halo helped much-loved pets stay with their caring families during times of financial crisis. In addition, the food helped our rescue partners transfer more pets in need of care and attention beyond what our facility could provide. It is estimated that over 330 pets were helped by the food.

A woman and her children came into The Animal Foundation’s Receiving Office, obviously upset about surrendering their pets, two large pit bulls and a cat. When our staff asked why they were surrendering, she said that it was just getting too hard to feed them. She had lost her job and money was too tight to make ends meet. Our Receiving Manager told her, “If food is the only reason you are surrendering your pets, we can help with that.” Danielle received two big bags of Halo Food on 10/28. She accepted the food and was so grateful she offered to share her story. She and her children, all in tears, headed back home with their family intact, furry members included.”

Thank you The Animal Foundation for making a noticeable difference for pets in your community!

When you choose Halo pet food, made from natural, whole food ingredients, your pet won’t be the only one with a radiant coat, clear eyes and renewed energy. Halo feeds it forward, donating over 1.5 million meals annually.

Halo is proud to partner with Freekibble.com and GreaterGood.org to achieve noticeable results for shelter pets together!

#GoFuzzybuttsGo

Twelve days til touchdown in San Diego.  We made it to LA and ironically, we’ve had only four rains days the entire West Coast walk, through Washington, Oregon, and Northern California and the week we arrive in LA, we’re greeted by a monsoon.
Completely drenched in Malibu and now navigating around mudslides and flooding, we’re making our way through the 75 mile swath that is the LA area.
Still, we’ve been trudging onward in the dreary drizzly, record breaking rainstorm sharing the message and spreading holiday cheer, the nearby pic was walking on Rodeo Drive,
We’re on schedule to walk the final mile to the Mexico border Sunday December 14th and our friends are making final plans for the day’s events.  Between now and then we have a couple of events planned leading up to the final mile:
Saturday Dec 6th.  4-6PM.  The Shore Break Hotel. For details, 714-465-4528.
Tuesday Dec 9th. 2-4PM. VMSG. 31896 Plaza Dr. San Juan Capistrano.
It’s been great having folks coming out and walking with us on our final stretch. To find out where you can join us for a mile or a day on our historic trek, the following sites will be posting our locations:
Or on my Instagram – 2dogs2000miles.  And on Twitter hashtag #GoFuzzybuttsGo
