"She’s had a very large loss of bone to her mandible, to her left side as well," said Siri’s surgeon at S.R.V.S, Dr. Brian Martin. "We’re going to do a partial mandibulectomy and then do some skin reconstruction to try and restore her normal oral cavity so she can eat."

Dothan, AL- It’s been a littler more than a week since Linda Miller and her grandchildren found the dog, who they’re now calling Siri, in Cypress, Florida.

"I found her behind an empty house and when I got back there, I looked at her face and I was like, ‘Oh my God,’" Miller said.

Siri was emaciated, bleeding and struggling to stay alive. She had been shot in the face with a shotgun.

"I called my husband crying and I said, ‘I know we can’t do this, but if you saw him you’d cry too,’ and he said, ‘Honey, do what ya got to do,’" Miller said.

Miller then loaded up Siri and another stray into her truck and headed home.

She then reached out to, ‘For The Love Of Alex Inc.’ on Facebook; an organization that helps fund charitable vet care for animals in need.

On Tuesday, Siri underwent surgery at the Southern Regional Veterinary Specialists in Dothan, Alabama.

Dr. Martin says he’s hopeful Siri will make a full recovery.

"Quality of life is what’s priority right now and I think we can get her back to eating well and her body condition, in time, will improve as she does," he said.

As for Miller, she has a strong message for whoever did this to Siri.

"If you are that person, please get help and if you know who this person was, listen; they will turn on a child, or an adult. If somebody could put food on a gun and do this to a dog, they will do it to your child."

Officials with ‘For The Love Of Alex Inc.’ say they’re reaching out to Animal Control in hopes of taking legal action against whoever did this.

… Throats of birds appear to have been deliberately cut

Charter boat captain Jim Sharpe was on his dock in Summerland Key, Florida. last Friday when he noticed a brown pelican with its throat slit, making it almost impossible for it to swallow fish.

Each time the pelican tried to swallow, the ballyhoo would fall out of its large pouch and onto the ground.

‘It looked like the pelican’s throat had been cut with a knife,’ he told the Miami Herald.

A 10-inch clean slit reached from the point of the bird’s beak, all the way back to the glottis.

‘The windpipe was dangling from the bird’s neck, almost like it was breathing out of a snorkel,’ Veterinarian Don Harris, director of the Avian & Exotic Animal Medical Center in Miami, told the Herald.

Several more brown pelicans have been turning up in the area with the same injury, and Maya Totman, director of the Florida Keys Wildlife Rescue, said she fears there’s a person or group of people out there doing this to innocent animals.

‘We’ve seen a lot of ripped pouches, but never anything like this,’ she said.

It’s not clear how the bird was maimed but it is possible that the bird was slashed from the inside.

Harris agreed that the cuts on the pelican brought in by Sharpe appeared to be intentional.

‘I firmly believe it to be malicious,” he told the paper, even likening the lacerations to ‘a Colombian necktie’ — in reference to a method of murder that began during the Colombian civil war.

Totman said she found one dead pelican and four others with their throats slit on Cudjoe Key on Sunday.

‘If we don’t catch them soon they are going to die from starvation a terrible death,’ she said. ‘This is so sad. So sad.’

Brown pelicans are a fixture at Florida marinas and other coastal areas. While they are delightful to many, Sharpe says they are not beloved by all fishermen.

‘They can be aggravating and try to grab your fish if you are fishing out of a boat,’ he said. ‘But I can’t imagine anybody deliberately maiming them, even though they can be a nuisance.’

On Sunday, a fisherman reported seeing several live brown pelicans with their pouches cut near Venture Out resort on Cudjoe Key. It’s separated from Summerland Key by a bridge.

The brown pelican is federally protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. It’s also on Florida’s protected list as a species of special concern, the Herald reported.

‘They can be aggravating and try to grab your fish if you are fishing out of a boat,’ Harris said. ‘But I can’t imagine anybody deliberately maiming them, even though they can be a nuisance.’

The dog was chained to a tree in the 600 block of Dent Street.

A necropsy determined Diamond died of starvation.

"When there’s so many resources and other options to intentionally leave a living breathing being that feels pain like you and I do on the end of a chain to die a slow death is horrendous," said Kate MacFall, the Florida Director of the Humane Society of the United States.

"Usually we’re able to get involved before it gets to this point, but on occasion, we do get calls where the dog is already dead," said Lieutenant Jeff Doyle of Tallahassee Animal Control.

Investigators determined Diamond belonged to 33 year old Terrance Barber.

They found when Barber was evicted from his home, he simply left Diamond chained to a tree.

Barber was offered a plea deal in the case, but he turned it down.

Instead, after nearly four hours of deliberation, a jury found Barber guilty of animal cruelty.

He’s been sentenced to 6 months in jail, two years probation and no pet ownership during the probation.

"A lot of times when we do get charges, there’s a plea offer and it’s usually taken," said Lieutenant Doyle. "This was somewhat unique that it went to a jury trial," he said.

Barber has a criminal history in Leon County dating back to when he was 19 years old.

In 1999 he was charged and later convicted of felony cocaine and cannibas possession.

The next year, he was again charged and later convicted of the same charges.

In both cases, he violated probation.

Now he’s been convicted of animal cruelty.

"We’re pleased to see there’s going to be justice for Diamond," said Lieutenant Doyle.

"I hope it deters someone from commiting a crime like this," said MacFall.

According to court records, Barber must turn himself in to the Leon County Jail to begin serving his six month jail sentence by 5 p.m. on Friday.

The Smyrna man told the judge he felt bad about what he had done and doesn’t know why it happened.

The dog had permanent injuries but survived. It’s now living with a new family in Florida.

WSB-TV (bit.ly/1fGbVZN ) reports a security camera captured images of a man grabbing a small dog by the neck and hitting it.

He then puts the animal in a crate and throws it off the balcony to the concrete parking lot below.

A witness found the animal alive and saved it.
