America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest halted due to cyber-bullying: Finalists to be honored collectively

Reported in AVMF NEWS, the following was announced:

“America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest Halted Due to Cyber-Bullying – Finalists to be Honored Collectively”

“The 2015 America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest has been halted, and we have declared all 20 finalists “America’s Favorite Veterinarians” following a vicious cyber-bullying attack which disrupted and contaminated the final election process. Activists opposed to cat declawing “hijacked” the contest, resorting to cyber-bullying the majority of the contest finalists. The attacks were reprehensible and undeserved, and have undermined the spirit of the competition and caused the contestants undue harm. Read the press release for more information.

“We thank you for your interest in the contest, and we are truly sorry for what has happened. Our contestants deserve the utmost respect for what they do every day as veterinarians. We ask that those who are bullying these contestants immediately stop. Please join us in honoring these veterinarians with the respect they deserve.”

My Greatest Comforts + A Giveaway (Win Moorea Seal’s The 52 Lists Project!)

Over the years, you guys have seen jewelry made by my friend Moorea Seal, as well as goods from her gorgeously curated shop, featured here on the blog. Today, I’m so excited to announce that her very first book, The 52 Lists Project: A Year of Weekly Journaling Inspiration, is being released! (And one of you is going to win a copy of you own; more on that in a minute.) Not only is Moorea a talented artist and incredibly successful business owner, she is also a genuine, kind, caring person who makes it her mission to empower girls and women of all ages. I was sent an advance copy of her book last month, and I can’t tell you guys how much I’ve been enjoying creating lists (and staring at the impeccably designed pages and cover – hello gold foil!). A journal of seasonal lists (that began as a project on Moorea’s blog where she would post a list each week, share her responses, and invite her readers to complete their own lists), The 52 Lists Project features a list for each week of the year, with space for your personal responses in between beautiful illustrations and photographs.

Today I wanted to share one of my favorite lists from you, taken from the Fall section section of the book, called ‘My Greatest Comforts.’ There is something therapeutic about list-making in general, but to sit down and reflect for a few quiet moments on the things in life that bring me the most comfort, along with the act of hand writing them down, was downright restorative. I felt refreshed after making the list, and the list itself has served as a great reminder for me to consciously partake in at least one (hopefully more!) of these comforts every single day.

In case you can’t read my handwriting in these images, here is my list of greatest comforts: downtime with my husband and daughter // long baths // music (too many types and bands to list) // flowers // going to the movies (and eating massive amounts of popcorn) // coffee // spending time in nature – beach/ocean, mountains, forests – I’ll take it all // Netflix binge watching sessions // massages (or any spa treatments really) // the Dalai Lama // motherhood // traveling to my favorite places // tacos tacos tacos // yoga // sitting in the sunshine // hot cider with cinnamon in the fall // dogs // going for walks // Tibetan momos (my favorite food) // freshly washed sheets // chocolate (obviously) // a clean house (a rare pleasure as I am very messy) //  the moon // being with my best friends (many of whom live far away) // kisses from my little girl // the sounds throughs open windows // my bed.

In celebration of Moorea’s book release, I’m thrilled to announce that one lucky Bubby and Bean reader is going to win a copy of your very own! See below for how to enter. And if you can’t wait (I wouldn’t be able to!), you can go purchase your own copy right now right here.

To enter, use the form below. There are several options for entries. You can also enter on Instagram, right here.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

This giveaway will run through September 16, 2015 and is open to Bubby and Bean readers worldwide. All entries from the Rafflecopter form above and Instagram will be combined. A winner will be randomly chosen shortly after the end of the giveaway and announced here.

Big congratulations to Moorea on the day of her book release!  I can’t wait to spend the year filling it out.

Ask Me Anything TOMORROW on reddit! (Plus reddit primer)

If you know and love reddit already, here’s the short short version:

Tomorrow (8/11/15) I will be on Reddit doing an AMA from 2-5 PST (5-8 EST) on /r/books. I’d love for you to join me!

If you don’t know reddit, you might need a more involved primer:

What is reddit?

Reddit is a website where people talk about, well, just about everything. Some people talk about football. Some people talk about cars. Others talk about knitting, politics, cat videos, just about anything under the sun.

As a massive catchall, it can understandably be very confusing to navigate. To help organize things, reddit is organized into topical categories, called subreddits. Some of them include:

I point this out because reddit sometimes usually is getting attention for bad things really annoying people do, and that scares some people off. Those people are on reddit as well, but if you stick to the subreddits where there are decent people talking about things you enjoy, you can avoid the purulent underbelly of gangrenous misogyny that makes some people nervous to check the site out.

What is an AMA?

One of Reddit’s claims to fame is their “Ask Me Anything” posts, where people from all walks of life go on to discuss their work, or experiences, or latest projects. Sometimes it’s an airplane pilot talking about their job. Sometimes it’s Woody Harrelson, or perhaps Elizabeth Warren. Sometimes it’s some guy who lost a leg in a tragic crocodile incident.

In the books subreddit, they limit their AMAs to authors, and this is what I’ll be doing tomorrow.

books

This is an opportunity for anyone to ask me about the book, the writing process, my dog’s cancer, veterinary medicine, what type of wine I prefer, my shoe size, literally anything. (That doesn’t mean I have to answer, if anyone was wondering whether I would answer what my weight is. No.)

For an example of a typical author AMA, here’s one from Robin Hobbs just a few days ago.

How do I participate?

Step One. Create a reddit account. It’s free.

Step Two. Come on to reddit.com/r/books between 2-6 PM PST Tuesday and find the thread (I’ll link it here too.)

Now here is how you do things on reddit. Let’s use this example of a post discussing an adorable baby bunny photo:

11_day_old_baby_bunny-

  1. The post at the top is the topic everyone is discussing. Here it is a baby bunny; on Tuesday mine will be a description of the book. My username there, selected many years ago, is dogrelish. Get it? Because I relish dogs :)
  2. The box underneath is where you add your comment/question. After you do that, hit “save” to submit the question. (ie Hey Dr V, do you still own the Jimmy Poos? etc)
  3. If someone else has a comment you want to respond to, you do so by clicking “reply”
  4. See those little up/down arrows? Reddit thrives on these. Clicking the “up” arrow means more people will see my thread. Clicking the “down” arrow buries it further down in the bowels of the internet. Use the arrows. :) They help!
